Prozac is an antidepressant (a SSRI) that can be used to treat such symptoms as panic, anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Such medical conditions as kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, diabetes, epilepsy or seizures, a history of suicidal thoughts or drug abuse may be a contraindication for using this medicine. If you are younger than 24 regular visits to your health care provider will be required during the first 2-3 months to make sure your symptoms do not get worse and you are not thinking about hurting yourself.
If you are using any of the following drugs, you shouldn’t take Prozac: pimozide, thioridazine, MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline). At east two weeks should pass between a dosage of any of the drugs mentioned above and Prozac. This medicine is FDA pregnancy category C – it can be dangerous to an unborn baby and can cause birth defects. It also passes into breast milk and can affect the health of a nursing baby. If you think you may have become pregnant consult your doctor as soon as possible but do not top taking Prozac as this may lead to a relapse of depression.
